I'm extremely thankful for the blue collar beginning of my career as a Journeyman Redseal Electrician. It was critical to have worked on a variety of buildings, learning how they are constructed, and coordinating with other trades such as refrigeration/HVAC. These experiences & interests informed my worldview as I entered the world of entrepreneurship and startups. I founded TZOA at the age of 23, after experiencing high levels of carcinogenic crystalline silica dust on industrial worksites. New regulatory changes in North America proposed to enforce safety, but there existed no convenient or affordable way to monitor exposure levels. It struck me that we care about our water & food quality, but we lacked a tangible way to see the impact the air we breathe has on our wellbeing. Thinking bigger impact, I conceptualized a wearable air quality monitor for global citizens that could crowdsource outdoor pollution data from thousands of devices onto city-wide maps in real-time, a product that won 'best inventions of 2015' awards from Time Magazine and Popular Science. Eventually it became clear that identifying problems didn't go far enough, we needed to help solve the problem, and without requiring changes in human behaviour. Our product line HAVEN emerged as a way to automatically improve indoor air quality (IAQ) with the insight that we can control our indoor environments in the same way we can control our indoor temperature through heating & cooling (HVAC). Our growing team identified a deep integration between HVAC equipment, our sensors, and automation. We own multiple patents and patents pending on our in-duct sensing and IoT controls, and we are pursuing our mission of transforming millions of homes into safe havens.
