In British Columbia V5T 3H7, CanadaAbout Me
Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society provides education & support programs for parents and caregivers through drop-in programs & outreach for local & refugee families with kids 0-6 in Vancouver.
MPFCS was inaugurated as a non-profit society in 1976 in response to the needs of local mothers for a safe, child-friendly space to meet for mutual support. The original centre was located on 6th. and Main in the heart of old Mount Pleasant, in East Vancouver. In 1980 the society negotiated with the Vancouver Park Board to move to its present location, leasing the then vacant clubhouse in the northwest corner of Robson Park, at St. George and E.13th. The parent volunteer board worked with staff to raise the funds to renovate the building, equipping it with a playroom and adult lounge area which remain at its core to this day.
On July 1, 2012 the Circles of Care & Connection Early Years Refugee pilot project became a program of the Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society.
With the addition of this program MPFCS is able to extend its vision, mission, and values to include Government Assisted Refugee families (80%) and refugee claimants (20%) with children 0-5 years of age from across Vancouver.
Through this program MPFCS provides outreach and home visiting as first steps towards connecting families to other family resource programs throughout Vancouver and by organizing family support, parent education, and social activities in the Canadian context, build relationships that address issues of isolation, and promote integration into Canadian society.
