I’m a Creative Director in name but a Creative Risk Taker in practice. To me, taking chances, sticking my neck out and exposing myself to new ideas is the only way to thrive in a creative business like advertising. It’s why – though I’ve worked as a creative director at some of the most influential ad agencies in the world, under the guidance of legends like Helmut Krone, Steve Hayden and Tom Messner – I’ve taken periodic breaks from the business to achieve an outlandish goal and master a new skill: becoming a staff writer on a hit TV sitcom … writing and selling screenplays … directing enough commercials to join the DGA … helping run a PR agency. In each case, I returned to my advertising career a little worldlier, a little smarter and a whole lot more capable. As a matter of fact, I'm engaging in another one of my breaks right now, and am working as a English teacher at a Los Angeles-area high school. I'm learning a great deal and it's certain to impact the next chapter of my career - whether I return to advertising or try something new.
