Development and Communications Manager – 35 hours per week Full Time position. This is a Hybrid position. This is a non-union management position that will be joining Kiwassa’s growing leadership team.

 


Overview: Kiwassa Neighbourhood House grows a welcoming and inclusive community in the vibrant Hastings-Sunrise and Grandview-Woodland neighbourhoods of East Vancouver, Located on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səlílw̓ətaʔ/Selilwitulh (TsleilWaututh), and xʷməθkwəyə̓ m (Musqueam) Nations.

 


Job Summary: Kiwassa Neighbourhood House is seeking a Development and Communications Manager to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial in promoting our programs and services, enhancing community engagement, and increasing funding. The ideal candidate will have strong communications expertise, exceptional grant writing and fundraising experience, social media expertise, and familiarization with IT functions. This role will also need to lead, gather information, design, develop, deliver, and assess communications programming for multiple program areas.

 


The key responsibilities for this role include:

 


Duties and Responsibilities:

Communications

  • Develops and Implements Kiwassa’s brand strategy and initiatives efficiently and accurately via many channels (website, printed materials, social media, etc.)
  • Provides training to the Kiwassa team to ensure consistent and effective brand communication via social media, website, video production, print materials, and verbal communication
  • Develops and implements systems to update website content and design across all program areas
  • Leads the creation of Kiwassa’s website and maintenance to ensure its current content and monitor its performance
  • In collaboration with the Director of Operations and the Executive Director creates a marketing strategy to communicate about programs and initiatives
  • Manages communications efforts for special events
  • Manages media relations, including building relationships with media contacts and proactively securing media opportunities
  • Crafts talking points and develops effective media strategies that may include press outreach, op-eds, and innovative social media
  • Leads the creation and distribution of regular email newsletters as well as updates and ensures mailing list is up to date in MailChimp
  • Develops marketing and social media strategies, using social media data and analytics to make key-decisions
  • Implement donor communications strategies
  • Leads efforts to continue sharpening social media presence to engage supporters, build momentum and share success stories
  • Manages the organization’s communications assets, including photo library, success stories, logo library, infographics, design files, print, and digital collateral
  • Provides assets to other team members as needed
  • Connect and collaborate with private, public, and non-profit organizations to identify partnership opportunities and engage staff, volunteers, community members, and partners in our work.

 


Development

  • Develop and execute an annual Fund/Resource Development Plan to support Kiwassa’s Strategic Objectives
  • Grows Major Donor portfolio through the qualification of new prospects
  • Lead and manage fundraising strategies, including annual campaigns, direct mail, telemarketing, monthly giving, and special events.
  • Cultivate donor relations, including acquisition, retention, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Completes annual government, foundation, corporate and individual funding applications and reporting
  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising and grant activities to ensure goal achievement
  • Liaise, establishes and maintains relationships with prospective donors, foundation, major donors, and partners’ contracts
  • Manages and maintains donor database to include basic donor information, donations, and donor acknowledgements
  • Produces Reports for fundraising efforts such as individual asks, annual mailings, and grant writing
  • Ensures donations are accurately accounted for in funder database and routed to the correct program area in our accounting system
  • Manages in-kind donations including tracking, gift acceptance, and gift acknowledgements
  • Stays current with foundation trends and giving priorities
  • Works closely with Director of Finance to understand fundraising and budget needs
  • Engages with the Board of Directors for fundraising initiatives attending Board meetings when necessary

 


Events Management

  • Leads special events including planning, data management, mailings, marketing, and other communication initiatives
  • Strategize fundraising events and perform all planning and delivery for events
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to develop new events to support our missions

Program Development

  • Establish program objectives, performance standards, and evaluate program operations.
  • Stay updated on best practices, trends, and developments.
  • Play a leadership role in planning, implementing, and evaluating RD and Administration programming related to the agency's mandate.

 


Operations

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the Collective Agreement and of all relevant agency policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Recruits, hires, interviews, orients, evaluates, and trains staff and volunteers for Communication and Development initiatives and other departments as required
  • Directly manages the Communications and Development team
  • Is responsible to participate and conduct investigations and make decisions regarding disciplinary action as needed
  • Creates relevant policies and procedures to ensure compliance with best practices
  • Supervises Office Administration and Reception Staff and assigns tasks related to communication and fund development
  • Manages Performance of Administrative staff in collaboration with Director of Operations

 


Leadership

  • Actively model approaches of collaborative leadership that reflect a philosophy of “leader as learner” and embraces intersectional and decolonizing approaches.
  • Support staff-led committees to enhance Kiwassa’s programs and culture.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Kiwassa’s strategic framework and support all staff in collectively realizing a shared organizational vision.
  • Promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working culture for staff and volunteers that reflects the organization’s values and supports a sense of belonging.

 


Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Director of Operations

Qualifications:

Education and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. communications, development), or equivalent combination of direct work experience and education

Training and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of communications and fund development experience
  • Experience with content creation software (i.e. Canva)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to write in a clear and compelling style
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of the provincial not-for-profit sector, foundations, granting agencies and philanthropic community across British Columbia, an asset
  • Proven track record of running successful social media campaigns, and increasing subscribers and engagement
  • Demonstrated ability to increase productivity and continuously improve methods and approaches
  • Ability to analyze the effectiveness of all marketing and communications efforts
  • Ability to prioritize and lead multiple projects, activities, and actions with competing deadlines and levels of urgency
  • Self-motivated, accountable to goals and willingness to learn new techniques, ideas, and skills
  • Excellent personal organization, work planning, and time management skills
  • Desired computer skills include proficiency with G-Suite, Slack, Monday.com, and Kindful
  • Experience with the public sector or non-profit preferred
  • Criminal Record Check

 


Salary: $60,000 to $77,000
